Installing Apache Tomcat on Linux

  1. Move to the directory where you want to create the tomcat folder
    $ cd /usr/local/
  2. Download needed files and install
    $ wget
    $ tar xvfz apache-tomcat-7.0.29.tar.gz
    $ ln -s apache-tomcat-7.0.29 tomcat
  3. Remove unneeded directories
    $ sudo rm apache-tomcat-7.0.29
    $ sudo rm apache-tomcat-7.0.29.tar.gz

How to use Apache Tomcat

To deploy web applications

Copy java war files into the /usr/local/tomcat/webapps folder

To Start Apache Tomcat

$ sudo sh /usr/local/tomcat/bin/

To Stop Apache Tomcat

$ sudo sh /usr/local/tomcat/bin/
