Installing Python2.7

September 18, 2012

What is Python?

Python is a general purpose, interpreted programming language. I’ve used this language primarily to develop web applications while using Django Framework.

Installation Steps:

$ wget
$ tar xfz Python-2.7.tgz
$ cd Python-2.7

#Bellow is the location python will be installed at: /opt/python2.7
$ ./configure --prefix=/opt/python2.7
$ make
$ sudo make install

Adding Python to Environment Variables

Note: If you are running RedHat Linux you shouldn't follow these steps because RedHat uses python 2.4 by default and upgrading to 2.7 would cause adverse affects on your system.
#Setting python home
$ export PYTHON_HOME= /opt/python2.7

#Setting python home in PATH varaible
$ export PATH = $PATH:$PYTHON_HOME/bin
